Foreign Coins Make Great Fundraisers

Foreign coins can be a fun, hassle-free fundraiser for your organization. Unlike many other fundraising options, your group has nothing to buy, nothing to sell.

If the members of your group are frequent travelers to Canada, Europe or Britain, or if you serve a community of regular travelers, consider asking your supporters to donate their unwanted Euro, British and Canadian coins and notes to support your programs. People who traveled to Europe before the adoption of the euro often have old banknotes set aside for their “next trip to Europe,” and those old notes can provide your group with valuable funds. You might be surprised how many of your friends, neighbors and relatives have 5, 20 or 100 dollars worth of unwanted foreign coins or notes sitting in a drawer at home.

Here is an example of how we helped one organization with a successful fundraising project:

Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS (BC/EFA) is the nation’s leading industry-based, not-for-profit AIDS fundraising and grant making organization. At many events in New York, BC/EFA sets out a fishbowl and asks theater-goers to deposit their foreign coins as a financially painless contribution. We recently assisted assisted BC/EFA in converting a substantial number of Euros and British Pounds into dollars to support their valuable mission.

Foreign Coin Business Services

Do any of these statements describe your business?

  • I operate a currency exchange business located outside of North America, and I need a way to convert large quantities of U.S. coins to paper currency or a bank deposit. There is no local market for U.S. coins.
  • I operate a business located outside of the United States, and many of my customers are American tourists or military personnel. They pay their bills (or leave tips for my employees) using U.S. coins, but I cannot use those coins in my home country.
  • I offer currency exchange services in the U.S., and often turn away customers who wish to convert Euro, Canadian or British Pound coins to U.S. Dollars.
  • I offer currency exchange services in the U.S. and buy Euro, Canadian or British Pound coins from my customers at a deep discount, but is not convenient for me to resell those coins.
  • I operate a retail business in the U.S. and would like to be able to accept Euro, Canadian or British Pound coins from my customers, but my bank won’t convert coins into dollars.
