FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)
GENERAL INFORMATION:
Is there a difference between Euro Coin Exchange and webuyeuros.com? How about webuyeuros.co.uk?
No – we are the same business. Euro Coin Exchange is the name of our business and “webuyeuros.com” is our website address (because it’s easy to remember). “webuyeuros.co.uk” is our website in the UK. We also maintain some specialty websites such as Canadian-Coins-Are.Us and Dollars-For-Deutschmarks.com.
Do you charge any fees to exchange my coins and bills?
No. We never have done and never will. Euro Coin Exchange imposes no hidden fees, no surprise charges and no other expenses. We exchange British, Canadian, euro coins and notes (and other currencies) on a flat rate basis to make it really easy to calculate how much you will receive for your foreign currency. Please note however that if you indicate PayPal as your preferred payment method, PayPal may charge you a ‘recipient’ fee. Euro Coin Exchange has no control over this fee and does not receive any portion of it or any other compensation from Paypal. If you opt to receive payment by check, there are no fees.
Is there a minimum amount I can exchange?
Yes – we ask that you exchange at least 5 euros, 5 dollars, 5 pounds, etc. at a time unless your currency is being donated to charity, in which case, we will accept any amount.
Is there a maximum amount I can exchange?
No, there is no maximum. If you are exchanging more than $500 worth of coins or other currency, we ask that you contact us in advance, and strongly suggest that you use a service such as USPS certified mail to send your coins to us. Please note that federal money laundering regulations may require us to obtain proof of your identity and other information if you send us more than $1,000 worth of foreign currency in a single shipment, or multiple related shipments. If this applies to you, please contact us prior to sending us your currency.
Do I need to send an “even” amount?
No. We will exchange any amount of Euros, British pounds, and Canadian dollars (even odd Canadian cents, for example: C$25.31). Until further notice, please keep in mind that we only purchase larger denomination Euro and Pound coins (€2, €1, £2 and £1).
Do you accept currencies other than euros?
Yes, in addition to exchanging Euro coins and bills, we also buy British Pounds and Canadian Dollars (coins and bills). On top of that, we also buy paper money from more than a dozen euro-zone countries. Please note, however, that these are the only currencies we buy, so please do not send any other currencies.
Notice regarding older British coins: We are unable to accept British coins which have been withdrawn from circulation by the Royal Mint. This specifically includes all ½p and 2½p coins, all pre-1971 (pre-decimalization coins such as the sixpence, shilling and two shilling coins), and the large-size (pre-1990) 5p, (pre-1992) 10p, and (pre-1997) 50p coins. If you are unsure about your British coins, please consult the U.K. links on our Coin Identifier Page.
What exchange rate do you use?
Click here to see our current rates. Due to currency fluctuations, we may need to adjust our exchange rates from time to time. As a result, the rate you see on our website on the day you send us your coins may be different from the rate displayed on the day we receive your currency. We will apply the rate which appears on our website as of 9 am on the day we receive your currency.
Why don’t you use the same exchange rate as the banks?
Banks deal with instant electronic transfers and/or large quantities of readily transferable paper money. They don’t buy coins. They don’t buy obsolete currencies. Exchange rates change all day, every day, while we must wait for coins to arrive from our customers, and wait again when we ship them to our buyers. Foreign coins are more expensive to transport and process which is why banks are not interested in them. Coins are also at greater risk of adverse currency fluctuation because of the longer interval between the time we buy them and the time they are repatriated (i.e. physically shipped to their home country). Our customers regularly tell us that we offer the best deal anywhere in the country with unsurpassed customer service. We provide great service and a fair deal, but (regrettably) we can’t perform miracles.
How soon will I get paid after I send my coins?
In most cases, we process all coin shipments on the day we receive them. If you request a payment to your PayPal account, your payment will be transmitted to you on the same day your coins are processed (generally the same day we receive your coins). If you request payment by check, the check will be mailed either on the same day as your coins are processed or on the following business day, depending on the time your coins are processed. If you provide us with an email address, we will send you an email message confirming that your payment is on its way.
I need some help identifying my coins and paper money. Where should I look?
The European Central Bank provides a comprehensive list of all euro coins currently in circulation. Click here to view the different coins by country. (Tip: a list of the coins produced by each country/principality within the eurozone can be seen on the right of the page in the link). Wikipedia has a very nice collection of photos of the various Euro coins, too, and a detailed discussion of British coinage. Go to our Coin Identifier page and we provide links to the appropriate Wikipedia pages.
Our website has pictures of dozens of old pre-euro banknotes which we buy. Go to our Rates page for links to the appropriate pages.
I tried to check you out on the BBB web site and they’ve never heard of you. What’s the story?
The BBB has never heard of us because we’ve never had a complaint filed with the BBB. If we fail to provide you with satisfactory service FOR ANY REASON, contact us and we will endeavor to satisfy your complaint within one business day of hearing about your problem. We are members of the Consumer Confidence Program of Net-ARB, the internet arbitration service, and have pledged to use fast and affordable online dispute resolution using email to remedy any conflict which we cannot immediately remedy on our own.
General packaging tips:
- Please be discreet and avoid writing ‘Euro Coin Exchange’ on your address label. (The Postal Service is amazingly trustworthy, but why tempt fate?) Please use the address exactly as it appears below.
Do not mail loose coins in a standard envelope; they can cause the envelope to tear during transit and some or all of your coins may get lost.- Insert enough padding around your coins so that they don’t rattle.
- Seal your package with plenty of tape.
- Please do not tape your coins to a card.
- Heavy boxes get dropped, tossed and abused. Use a coin bag from the bank, or at least “double bag” your coins in case your box is damaged.

I have a big jar of coins. What’s the best way to ship my coins?
If you have a large quantity of coins, consider using a USPS Flat Rate box (there’s no weight limit!). Seal the coins in one or more plastic bags (many shippers “double-bag” their coins); put the coins in the box; DON’T FORGET TO INCLUDE YOUR PACKING LIST; insert enough padding so the coins don’t rattle; seal the box with plenty of tape; address and mail to Euro Coin Exchange.
Important note regarding larger flat rate boxes: When shipping a medium-sized flat rate box (20-45 lbs. of coins), we strongly recommend that you pack your coins in a heavy plastic coin bag, just in case the box is damaged in transit. You can usually get one or more of these for free from your local bank.
We do not recommend the use of large-sized flat rate boxes (or the flatter-shaped medium boxes) to mail coins. In addition to being too heavy if filled completely, the shape of the box causes the side-seams to split if filled with heavy coins. This is not a problem with the 11″x8.5″x5.5″ medium boxes (see pictures below), which are more cube-shaped.

But isn’t it expensive to mail coins?
When it comes to mailing coins, the US Postal Service is your best friend. If you use a USPS Flat Rate box, you can mail a box full of coins for as little as $5.15 with no weight limit! Larger boxes are available, too, and the price is a true bargain. You can mail 30-40 lbs. of coins in a medium-sized Flat Rate Box for around $11 (they don’t lie when they say “If it fits, it ships!”).
I have just a few coins. What’s the best way to ship my coins?

We have found that the best method for shipping very small quantities of coins is to place them in a Zip-Loc bag; fold them tightly in your packing list; place the bundle in a “bubble” or padded envelope; and mail the envelope to Euro Coin Exchange. Please DO NOT TAPE your coins to a card or page. CAUTION: Do not mail loose coins in a standard envelope. They can cause the envelope to tear during processing at the Post Office and get lost, or may result in your envelope being returned to you for additional postage. For larger quantities, but fewer than a big boxful, consider using a USPS Priority Mail Small Flat Rate Box. These are the 9X5X1.5 inch cardboard boxes — and you can mail a lot of coins for a flat rate of $5.15.

Should I insure my shipment?
The choice is yours. The United States Postal Service and private companies such as Federal Express and UPS are remarkably secure. Certified mail or delivery confirmation is generally good enough. For larger amounts, we strongly recommend Certified Mail, Fed Ex, etc.
Can I drop off my coins at your office in person?
No, due to security and insurance purposes, we are unable to accept coins in person. Even if you are in the immediate area, we require that all coins be mailed to us. In some cases, we can arrange to have a representative meet you at a local branch of a commercial bank. Please contact us for details.
I live in the United Kingdom (UK). What are my options?
We now have an office near London to serve our customers throughout the UK. Please visit our UK website for our local postal address, phone number, payment options other important information.
I live outside the United States. Can I receive payment in a currency other than US dollars?
Yes. If you wish to receive payment in a currency other than US dollars, we can send your payment to you via PayPal (subject to PayPal’s terms and conditions and applicable exchange rate). We are only able to send paper checks payable in US dollars. If you live in the UK, see the answer to the previous question.
